Laser hair removal can remove hair from all parts of the body including face,
legs, arms, underarms, and back. It can also treat sensitive areas such as the
chest, nipples and bikini line.
The treatment soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of light is
delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No
local anesthetic or pain medication is typically required, although some
patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are
treated.
Most areas require 6-8 treatments, but this depends on various factors such as
hair thickness, area treated, or hair growth cycle. Not all hairs grow at the
same time. They go through three distinct phases: growth, resting, and
shedding. Laser hair removal works by disabling the hair in the active growth
phase. Other hairs may enter the growth phases at different times.
Immediately after treatment the area may appear slightly red and swollen. Three
to seven days following, you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair.
These hairs are actually being shed as a result of the treatment, and are not
regrowing. Between treatments, you should not wax or pluck hair although
shaving is permissible.
Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are
slight reddening or swelling- similar to sunburn. These effects typically last
for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. It is
advised to consult with your physician for complete information on the benefits
and risks of treatment.
Following the treatment, you may return to your normal activities right away.
Since there is a possibility of redness, you may want to plan work or social
engagements accordingly. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated
areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea to limit your sun
exposure. Depending on your skin type, you may use a specially formulated skin
care product under the recommendation of a physician
Laser hair removal can truly be life changing for those with lifelong body
image issues regarding unwanted hair.
